- Abstract:
- Netflix Spain Through a Critical Lens by Allyson Voerg.
As Netflix’s first Spanish original production, Las chicas del cable paved the way for the many other Spanish productions that followed it, while adding an additional period drama to Bambú Producciones repertoire. Joining Netflix’s lineup in 2017, the show follows the exploits of four women who work as switchboard operators in the 1920s, for a telecommunications company in Madrid, Spain. Each woman uniquely struggles with the traditional, patriarchal expectations placed on them, and as they each work to achieve their own independence and freedom, they actively begin to challenge these imposed gender norms. However, while the show presents itself as a period piece which parallels modern feminism, there are several aspects of it which undermine not only its authenticity of depicting a historical time period, but that weaken its feminist message as well. Most notably the modern music chosen, in addition to the wardrobes of the working-class women, the character development, and even the title itself, all work to portray the relevance of the show’s themes to the modern day, resulting in the negligence of historical accuracy. While Las chicas del cable has been reviewed positively for its enjoyable aspects, it is worth considering its flaws in order to understand how period dramas can operate as a nod to history, or a means of commercial gain.
